Ruth Evelyn Johnson Parker left this earth and stepped into eternity on January 7, 2023, on what would have been her husband, Dale’s, 99th birthday. What a day of rejoicing and celebration that must’ve been in heaven!
Ruth was born on December 12, 1925 to Anna Dudley Johnson and Rufus Johnson in Lordstown, Ohio. Her mother died when she was only six years old. She grew up on the family farm where chores and hard work were expected and common place. After graduating from Lordstown high school as the class valedictorian and homecoming queen, she went to Hiram college for one year. She was the last surviving member of her graduating class. She enjoyed going to class reunions and keeping in touch with people that she had known or met along life‘s journey.
On November 9, 1944 she married Dale Parker when he was home on leave from the US Navy. They celebrated 76 years of togetherness, most of that being spent on the farm they bought in North Bloomfield in 1946. Ruth was always busy and active in the community and in her children’s lives. She continued her education and taught grade school, being dearly loved by her students. Her love of her Lord and Savior Jesus lead her to teach Sunday school for over 25 years. For years, she was an active member of the local garden club, retired teachers association, United Methodist women, and their Farm Bureau council. She was a 4-H leader, and a beautiful seamstress. She became an excellent cook. For each one of her grandchildren’s graduation open houses and weddings, she made over 1000 cookies. Every year she grew a large garden. That produce was either canned or frozen for meals throughout the winter.
After Dale retired, they started a new chapter in their lives by joining MMAPs, Mobile Missionary Assistance Program. For 12 years, they traveled four months out of the year to various locations throughout the United States for three-week work projects. They had the opportunity to visit all 48 states plus Alaska before buying their winter home in Lake Placid, Florida. They became snowbirds as the sunshine there beat out the snow and ice in Ohio.
Wherever she was, Ruth was always someone you could count on to help out wherever and whenever necessary. Family was always a priority for her. She had a beautiful smile, and was warm and welcoming to all who knew her. As one granddaughter said, “ Everyone loves Grandma Parker.” She lived a life of love and service to others.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Dale, on June 15, 2021, and infant son, Bruce Earl; a sister, Grace Penn; and, three brothers, Frank, George, and Ralph. She is survived by two sons, Lynn (Rosalie) Parker and Dean (Peggy) Parker, both of North Bloomfield; her grandchildren, Jonathan (Kim) Parker, Brad (Lisa) Parker, Julianne Parker, Beth (Frank) Kuligowski and Dale Parker; and great grandchildren Oren, Fred, Jessica and Jackie Parker and John, Abigail and Kirsten Kuligowski. She is survived by four sisters: Mary Jo Bofenkamp, Elsie Fowler, Ruby Hawkins, and Anna Hirschinger.
