Roger Matthews Obituary

Roger A Matthews, 75 of Middlefield, Ohio, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, August 21, 2022, while working on repairing a barn roof on his farm in Mesopotamia.
Roger was born in 1946, to parents Mercedes (Noyes) and Cleon Matthews. Roger graduated from West Geauga Highschool in 1965. Soon after graduating Roger joined the Army and served in Germany. Upon his return he married the love of his life, Jo-Ann (Mansfield) Matthews in 1968 and they remained married for 53 years. They had two children, Tonia and Connie. 
Roger was a loving husband and father. He enjoyed working with horses and spent many years training, supporting, and attending horse shows with his daughters. Over the years he worked for several companies, of note are West Geauga School District, Wheeler Landscaping and Peairs Excavating. He also spent many years supporting the Amish community by hauling horses to and from farms across Geauga County and Ohio.  He was well known and was always willing to lend a helping hand.  He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren and was always interested in their well-being. Roger will be greatly missed not only by his family but also the community in which he served. 
He was proceeded in death by his grandparents Everette and Wilma (French) Noyes, his parents Cleon and Mercedes (Noyes) Matthews and his sister Elaine (Matthews) Mansfield. He is survived by his wife Jo-Ann, his brother Carl Matthews, his daughters Tonia (Rudy) Detweiler from Delano, Minnesota and his daughter Connie (Rick) Martell from Middlefield. His grandchildren Brandon (Joelle) Detweiler, Jaison Detweiler, Parker Detweiler, Chandler Detweiler and Courtney (Derron) Sundman and his great grandchildren, Levi, Caiden, and Brixton. 
A memorial service will be held at Southington United Methodist Church, 4348 Smith Nelson Rd, Southington, OH 44470 on Saturday August 27th. Calling hours are from 10-11 and the service will be at 11:00 AM with Lunch to follow. Rev. John Bramtley officiating.
