Richard Saal Jr. Obituary

Richard Lawrence Saal Jr. “Larry” 84, of Lodi, Ohio joined his wife Molly on January 3, 2022. Larry was born June 30, 1937, in Akron, Ohio and was the son of the late Richard and Margot Saal.  He was a 1955 graduate of St. Mary’s High School and was employed for 32 years by Akron Fire Department, retiring as Battalion Captain in 1992.  He married Molly Saal in 1981 and has been devoted to her even after she passed away in 2016.  He was retired member of Local 330 Union. Larry was devoted to the Lodi Community and volunteered as the Assistant Fire Chief for the Lodi Fire Department for three years. He was an ordained Deacon in the Charismatic Episcopal Church and volunteered as both a Chaplain and a “Gopher” for the surgical department at Lodi Community Hospital for 20 + years.  He was a Red Cross blood donor giving over 25 gallons during his lifetime.  Larry also volunteered for the Wayne County Hospice, for Habitat for Humanity and loved helping Matthew 25.  He loved to travel to exotic places, gardening, woodworking, feeding his “darn” birds, and enjoyed spending time with his family.  He was known as having a warped sense of humor and always loved a good prank or joke. He ran the “Us and Udders” dairy goat farm with Molly for many years, providing neighbors and friends with fresh goat milk, soaps, and other products.  His children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, admired and respected “Poppy” for his dedication to family and community service. He felt he had totally succeeded as a Father.

He will be missed forever by his daughters, Mary Kay (Donnie) Sly, Suzie (David) Wagoner, Heather First, sons, Andrew (Karen) Saal, Mathew (Jaime) Saal, grandchildren, Kristen (Adam) Clausen, Nicholas (Ashley) Barbieri, Kati Rose (Josh) Davis, Jacob (Samantha Arnold) Sly, Grace Saal, Anna Saal, Isaac First, McKenna Saal, Malcom Saal, Ethan Saal, Morgan, and Kira Boler. He is also survived by six great grandchildren, Riley Davis, Madalyn Clausen, Emerson Clausen, Nicholas Barbieri Jr., Maggie Davis, and Nathan Barbieri. He also will be missed by his sister, Sandra (Joe) Shumaker, brothers, Thomas Saal, Dave (Sue Allison) Saal, many loving nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by first wife, Patricia (Carlson) Saal, and his wife Molly Elaine Saal.
