Rev. William Augustus Thompson (87), of Painesville, formerly of Mentor, passed away at Tripoint Medical Center, Saturday, February 10, 2024. He was born September 15, 1936, in Dixon Springs, IL, to the late Willam Alford and Bessie (Smothers) Thompson. He graduated from Pope County Community High School, IL in the Class of 1955, and then attended Apostolic Bible Institute, in St. Paul, MN. Gus worked for the Ford Motor Stamping Plant in Walton Hills and was the Retired Pastor of New Life Church in Perry. He was an ordained member of the UPCI and ALJC. He was an excellent scholar and teacher of God’s Word. Gus enjoyed playing the guitar and was an author of the book, “Pilgrimage of a Storyteller.” Most of all, he loved his family and loved spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren, calling them his Grand Champions.
He will be sadly missed by his loving wife, Sherrill A. (Dickerhoff) Thompson, to whom he has been married 66 years. He leaves behind his children, Candy (Mark) Porostosky, Rebecca Lynn Thompson, William A. (Dovie) Thompson II, his grandchildren, Monica (Chris) Sheldon, Mark (Susan) Porostosky, Billy (Mychele) Thompson, Bradley (MicKayla) Thompson, Bethany (Christian) Walmer, and his great grandchildren, Titus, Hank, Brielle, Liam, Azariah, and Harvey. He is also survived by his siblings, Charles Thompson of Eddyville, KY, Earl (Lynn) Thompson of Sugargrove IL, Janice Sue Kimes of Jacksonville FL. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Nell Ferguson, brothers, Doyne Ferguson, Donald Ferguson, and Ray Thompson.
Calling hours will be held Friday, February 16, 2024, from 4:00-6:00 and 7:00-8:00 PM and Saturday February 17, 2024, from 10:00-12:00 PM, followed by his Celebration of Life service at 1:00 PM. All his services will be held at New Life Church, 4080 Call Road, Perry, Ohio 44081. Officiant will be Rev. James Stark.
A Private Graveside service for family will be held at a later date in Riverside Cemetery, Painesville, Ohio.
