Randal Scott “Randy” Sweet, age 69, an active member of the Huntsburg, Ohio community, passed away on Monday, January 22, 2024, at UH Geauga Medical Center. Born on December 3, 1954, at Corey Hospital in Chardon to Sterling and Wilma J. (Vandervort) Sweet, Randy's life was marked by his diverse pursuits and genuine connections with those around him.
Growing up in Middlefield, Randy attended the First United Methodist Church of Middlefield and graduated from Cardinal High School in 1974. It was during this time that he met future wife, Cathleen (Pitorak), whom he married on October 1, 1983, at the First United Methodist Church of East Claridon. Cathy affectionately described Randy as a "Rustic Renaissance man," highlighting his down-to-earth nature and wide range of interests and hobbies.
Randy took pride in his work at Creation Industries, LLC in Middlefield, where he, alongside his good friend Donald McDowell, manufactured roofing adhesive. His professional journey included roles as a bus driver for the Hershey Montessori School, a builder, and a stint at Patton Pest Control.
Actively involved in various organizations and activities, Randy made a significant impact on the community. He was a member of the Experimental Aircraft Association, EAA Chapter 5, and an enthusiastic Comanche pilot at Geauga County Airport. His commitment extended to the East Geauga Kiwanis, Big Brothers/Big Sisters, and the EAA Young Eagles program, where he took joy in providing free plane rides to inspire the interest of young minds in aviation.
Randy's passions were diverse, from grilling and bowling to solving Sudoku puzzles and enjoying oldies tunes. A devoted Pittsburgh Steelers fan and an avid supporter of the OSU Buckeyes, he cherished attending a game in the Shoe before his son Chris graduated. Among his many connections, Randy shared a special bond with his beloved grandson, Mikey.
He is survived by his loving family, including his wife Cathy, son Christoff Sweet, daughter Danielle (Marcus Mytro) Sweet, grandson Michael Cabrera and his father Omar Cabrera, brother Ronald Sweet, sister Maribeth (Sam Roberts) Lieberth, sister-in-laws Susan Sweet and Sue Pitorak (Rick) Jones, brother-in-law Mickey (Susan Hannahoe) Pitorak, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. Randy was preceded in death by his parents, brother David Sweet, and sister Jeanne Sweet.
