JOHN “JACK” MARSH LUCKAY
Age 75, passed away on Thursday December 1, 2022, at the family home in Munson Township. He was born October 7, 1947 in Cleveland to the late William and Louise (Marsh) Luckay. He graduated from Chardon High School in 1965 and went on to attend Kent State University. Jack worked for Horsburgh & Scott in Cleveland for 20 years where he completed a trade apprenticeship program. He was a qualified journeyman machinist and soon went on to become their youngest gear superintendent. In the early 1980’s he went on to start his own gear company “Lakeway Gear” in Eastlake, OH.
Jack loved fishing, trapping and gardening, an outdoorsman. Jack was an avid fisherman. He referred to himself as “The Trout Man”. He spent years fishing and monitoring the local streams and was vocal about maintaining the environment for the native brook trout. He also was proud of his summer days spent gardening. He liked growing pumpkins, melons, sunflowers and more.
Most recent years, Jack was renovating the family farm and Century Home where he grew up. The farm has been in the Luckay family for over 70 years. This is where he continued to garden and spend time with his dog Nick. He dug a picturesque pond out back that can be viewed from the kitchen. The East Branch Chagrin River runs in the back of the property and it was here where Jack’s love of fishing, trout fishing and trapping began.
In the earlier 2000s, Jack enjoyed going out west to visit friends. He had a dear friend who lived in Sonoita, Arizona, that he frequently visited. Jack loved telling the stories of all of his adventures out west of the people he met and his experience in the rough and tough cowboy saloons. One of Jack’s stories included Snuff Garrett, who was somewhat of a legend in the area, and Jack told us to Google him. Jack’s friends out west nicknamed him “Cowboy Jack”.
Jack had many hobbies and passions through the years: he tapped maple trees and boiled sap to make his own maple syrup, he liked to build and fly model planes, and he loved antique engines and old machinery, tools and cars, and attending antique machinery and car shows. Jack enjoyed antiquing and Sunday drives in his 1931 Ford Model A.
Survivors include his son John “Jack” Luckay Jr., daughter, Becky (Doug) Finnick, 5 grandchildren, Alex Luckay, Anna (Adam) Luckay, Allison (Kevin) Powers, Victoria Finnick, Katherine Finnick, a brother, William “Billy” (Jan) Luckay, and Dolores Luckay. He was preceded in death by his parents.
A Celebration of his life will be held later in the spring of 2023. He will be laid to rest in Fowlers Mill Cemetery at a later date.
Jack will be greatly missed by his family and friends. He was a good grandfather and enjoyed watching his grandchildren grow into successful adults and have families of their own. He enjoyed that his grandchildren loved to “fish”.
