Gilberta Sawyer Town

Gilberta Sawyer Town, 95, died on November 18, 2024, in Middlefield, OH. She was born on November 16, 1929, in Middlefield to Roy G. and Laura King Sawyer. Gilberta graduated from Middlefield High School in May 1947, and she attended Kent State University, where she majored in elementary education.

She married Wilton K. Town in Greenup, KY on June 10, 1948. She was employed at Middlefield School (later renamed Jordak Elementary School) as the principal's secretary for 32 years. A member of the First United Methodist Church of Middlefield since 1981, she also served as organist for 31 years and authored three volumes of the church’s history.

Gilberta was a 55-year member of the Progressive Music Club in Middlefield until the group disbanded in 2007. She was a charter member of the Middlefield Historical Society (MHS). Upon retiring from Cardinal schools in 1985, she first became treasurer of MHS and later secretary. She also managed the Arts and Crafts Fair at the Middlefield Swiss Cheese Festival for many years. Gilberta enjoyed music, playing the piano and organ, watching television, puzzles and computer games.

She and Wilton were proud parents of Kenneth Town and Roxanne (Andrew) Miller, both graduates of Cardinal High School and both of whom survive her. She is also survived by one brother, Keith (Cindy) Sawyer of Brooksville, FL; two granddaughters, Holly (Jason) Fischer of Cincinnati, OH, and Wendy (Daryl) Meese of St. Louis, MO. In addition, she has four great grandchildren, Isaiah and Rylee Meese, and Ace and Rachel Fischer. She has three nieces, Cheri (Mark) Garcher, Lisa (Charles) Jones, and Laurie (Kenneth) Thompson. She has one nephew, Cale (Vicky) Sawyer. She was preceded in death by her husband Wilton, parents and parents-in-law.

Calling hours will be on Sunday,  November 24, 2024, from 2:00-5:00 PM at Sly Family Funeral Home, 15670 West High Street, Middlefield. Funeral Service will be on Monday, November 25, 2024, at 11:00 AM at the First United Methodist Church of Middlefield, 14999 South State Ave., Middlefield. Gilberta will be laid to rest at Middlefield Cemetery at a later date.
