Edward Selby Obituary

Edward McDaniel Selby, 82, of Middlefield Ohio passed away at his home Friday, September 6, 2019. He was born August 7, 1937 in Martins Ferry, OH to the late Edward Martin and Edith (McDaniel) Selby. He graduated from Linsly Military Institute in Wheeling, WV., and then joined the Army at the age of 17. While serving in the US Army Corps of Engineers he rose to the rank of Sergeant at the age of 19. Ed served in the Army from 1955-1958 which included being stationed in Germany for two years.
After his service he received his Bachelor of Education and a Master’s in Administration at Ohio University. He also earned 23 hours toward a Doctoral degree. Although he had opportunities to become an administrator he preferred to stay in the classroom with students. Ed taught government for 11 years, then took over instructing the O.W.E vocational program. He loved working with the students, not against them. He presented an Outstanding Student award recognizing individual achievements for those who may have not been acknowledged in traditional classes. For many years Ed turned on the lights, made sure the press box and scoreboard were set up, and ran the clock at for Cardinal High School football games. His summers were spent painting with his good friend and colleague Bob Lowe. Ed was a teacher for Cardinal High School for 27 years before retiring in 1989.
In his younger years Ed enjoyed hunting and fishing with friends which included many trips to Canada. Ed loved cars. He owned a 1968 Pontiac GTO and brought back a 1958 M.G. sports car upon returning from service in Europe. Ed also owned various motorcycles over the years, the last being a Moto Guzzi which he and Ethel enjoyed riding together. Ed also served on the Board of Directors for the Geauga Credit Union for many years. Ed had six grandchildren, the first being Edward Alek Selby. Most recently he enjoyed visits from Nathan and Nolan, his twin grandsons who currently serve in the US Army and recently returned home from tours in Afghanistan. He dearly loved his 3 younger grandchildren Kaden, Jake, and Kara. Ed often commented that his only granddaughter was his favorite granddaughter.
He will be sadly missed by his loving wife, Ethel, children: Edward Lee (Polly) Selby of Portland Oregon, Janet Leigh Kinnard of Athens, Ohio, James Robert (Kelly) Selby of Bainbridge, Ohio, six grandchildren and his brother, John R. Selby of San Diego CA. Besides his parents he was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Alice Pugh; and son-in-law, Michael Kinnard. Calling hours will be held Tuesday, September 10, 2019 from 2:00-4:00 and 6:00-8:00 PM at Sly Family Funeral Home, 15670 W. High St. Middlefield, OH 44062.
