Douglas Sitko Obituary

On a gorgeous day as it was this past Thursday, October 22, 2020; you would be able to find Doug outside.  But, on this day, he became a sunray as he passed quietly from this earth.

For his entire 67 years, Doug was a lover of the outdoors, and was most often outside. Walking, hunting for whatever was in season, which includes black powder, archery, trapping, fishing(even though he didn’t know how to swim and scared us many times), snowplowing many a driveway, farming on his parents farm, gardening for his family and for others, taking care of animals, and working on cars.  These things made him smile.

Most people who knew Doug would say they thought of him when they were outdoors and observed something special.  He loved to receive pictures of the many gifts of nature on his little flip phone.  When inside, he was a fabulous baker and cook.  Diets were not respected, and pounds were gained by the recipients of his goodies.  His natural talent was encouraged as he stood by his mother’s side learning the Polish family recipes passed from generation to generation.

Doug did not know a stranger as all became his friend.  More than once, he emptied the cabinets because someone needed food, and he provided.  He would empty his wallet because someone needed money for gas, utilities, whatever -  so he gave.  He always lent a helping hand when someone needed a car fixed, a lawn mowed, a house repaired, or … the list does not end.  Always helping- never needing affirmation or accolades.  He always provided a shoulder to lean on, or an ear to listen.  Some considered him a quiet man, but the coffee was always ready to be shared over a story, a quick smile, an and a laugh.

Concisely, he his heart with the love of his life, Mindy (Roose), for 46 years.  Doug alway sencouraged and mentored his family.  His daughter, Heather (VanderMaas) shares her father’s love of giving and family.  Even before Bryan married Heather, Doug treated him as a son.

Doug loved being a grandfather!  His face would light up, and the pride he felt for all his grandchildren, Caeleigh, Hunter, and Ava was apparent.  They will forever remember him and carry the lessons he taught and his love in their hearts.  Doug was always able to get a smile from Caeleigh.  He was so excited for Hunter obtaining his dream of college, and Ava… his little huntress.  I think he considered his beloved Abby (his dog) a grandchild also.
