Doris H. Smith, 99, of Chagrin Falls, formerly of Detroit, Michigan, passed away Friday, December 27, 2024, at Kensington Care Center in Aurora. Doris was born on February 24, 1925, in Plymouth, MI, to the late Howard and Hazel (Groaner) Fishbeck.
During World War II, Doris worked in Henry Ford’s Willow Run Bomber Plant, where she helped manufacture B-24 bombers. She graduated high school and went on to marry Bruce Henry Smith on July 10, 1948. Doris served as the senior seamstress for Jacobson Department Store in Birmingham, MI, before earning her Master’s degree in Historical Preservation. She worked alongside her husband, Bruce, at Smith & Smith Architecture.
Doris was an active member of the Northminster Presbyterian Church, the Michigan Historical Society, the National Historical Trust, and the Michigan Society of Architecture.
She will be dearly missed by her sons, Kendall (Judith) Smith of Lancaster, SC, and Brooke (Julie Wolfgram) Smith of San Pedro, CA; grandchildren Jennifer, Eric, Erik, Nathan, Adam, and Matthew; and seven great-grandchildren. Doris was preceded in death by her parents, her beloved husband, her son Clayton Smith, and her brother Glenn Fishbeck.
A private family service will be held.
