Donald W. Wood

Donald W Wood, 73 of Troy Township, died suddenly on January 18, 2019 at UH. Geauga Medical Center. He was born July 26, 1945 in Vero Beach Florida. And lived most of his life in Troy.

He was the beloved husband for 49 years of Kathy (Ulle), caring father of Ryan (Valerie), Nathan, (Joni) and Kristen (Lewis) Tomsic He was preceded in death by his parents William and Josephine Wood and his brother Charles.

He worked in the building supply business for 50 years, first at Sidley in Newbury and then at Koltcz Concrete Block in Oakwood.

He loved the Geauga County Fairs and was a 4H member for 8 years—horse club, square dance team, and Junior Leadership Club. Through his mentor, Roy Emerson, he became an area square dance caller who worked especially well with those who never square danced before. He served in the army for 2 years, 65-67 in Schweinfurt Germany.

His hobbies were always work related, square dance caller, concrete mason, producer of quality hay and beef cattle and raising horses. He finally retired in June of 2018 but quickly got a part time job at NAPA. Just couldn't sit.

 He did love the fun of RV camping and traveling with his navigator/wife and the NEORAMS camping club family. Also enjoyed RV fix it projects while with the group.

Loved to help park cars during the Fair at Hog Hauser Parking Emporium with our Fair family.

Not one who could easily share his emotions, he loved the grandkids: Miranda and Matthew Wood, Owen and Hayden Tomsic, and Reese and Emerson Wood. His signature fist-bump greeting was fine with them. He wanted to instill the strong work ethic he was raised with and lived by with all his kids and grandkids. He leaves many nieces and nephews, friends and family who will miss this man of few words who was content to watch and not engage in small talk unless it was RVs, brick, stone, concrete, or trucks.

He never said, "goodbye" but always "Later."  So we say later, Don.

 Memorial calling hours will be held from 4:00 PM until the time of his Memorial service at 7:00 PM, Friday, January 25, 2019 at the Sly Family Funeral Home, 15670 W. High Street Middlefield, OH 44062. In lieu of flowers, make a donation to your favorite charity.
